How to make your own jigsaw puzzle

The whole process takes less than a minute. Everything happens in the browser, so there is no upload queue, no email confirmation and no waiting for a file to be processed by a server.

  1. Choose a photo. Select a JPG, PNG or WebP image up to 15MB. The image can come from your phone, tablet or computer.
  2. Choose the piece count. Pick 24, 48, 96 or 192 pieces. The difficulty changes the number of pieces, not the image.
  3. Make and play. Generate the puzzle and start dragging pieces. Use Edges if you want to build the border first.

What is a photo jigsaw puzzle?

This free jigsaw puzzle maker lets you create your own jigsaw puzzle from a photo. A photo jigsaw puzzle is a digital puzzle made from an image you choose. Instead of buying a printed puzzle, waiting for delivery and finding space on a table, you upload a photo and play it immediately on screen. The picture is cut into interlocking pieces, and you rebuild it by dragging pieces into place.

This is different from a print-on-demand service. If you want a physical box to hold in your hands, a printing service is the right tool. If you want to turn a photo into a puzzle in seconds and play it right away, this browser-based tool is the faster option.

What makes a good photo for a jigsaw puzzle?

The best puzzle photos give your eye something to land on. That usually means a clear subject, a range of colours and enough texture that neighbouring pieces look different from one another.

  • Use a clear focal subject. A pet, a person, a building or a flower bed works better than a wide scene where the subject is a tiny part of the frame.
  • Choose sharp focus. Blurry areas turn into a field of similar pieces at higher counts. Photos from a recent phone are usually sharp enough.
  • Look for texture and colour changes. Gardens, markets, travel scenes and detailed portraits are easier to sort than a large area of plain sky or a single flat wall.
  • Keep the important part near the centre. The game uses a 16:9 board and crops the image to fill it, so the edges of a wide or tall photo may be trimmed. Keep the subject away from the far edges.
  • Use enough resolution. A modern phone photo is more than enough. Very small or heavily cropped images can look soft when they are divided into 192 pieces.

Very dark images, black-and-white photos and scenes with almost no contrast can still work, but they are more difficult at 96 or 192 pieces. Start with a lower piece count if the image is subtle. For ready-made examples, browse the nature, animals and flowers collections.

Which piece count should I choose?

24 pieces is a quick warm-up or a good fit for younger players. 48 pieces is a relaxed short session. 96 pieces is the standard challenge for most desktop players, and 192 pieces is for a longer, more detailed solve. You can change the count after the game starts, and Edges lets you focus on the border before the interior.

Your image is decoded and cut on your device. It is not sent to a server, stored in an account or added to the public library. The custom game is temporary: refreshing the page will not restore the same photo or puzzle. You should only use images you have the right to use.

Custom photos vs ready-made puzzles

A custom puzzle is personal: a family photo, a pet, a holiday picture, a classroom image or a picture you made yourself. A ready-made puzzle is better when you want to start immediately and choose from a curated collection. You can also try the daily jigsaw puzzle for a new shared image each UTC day.

Ways to use a custom photo puzzle

A custom puzzle can be a quiet solo activity or something to share in person. Use a favourite pet photo for a gentle afternoon puzzle, a holiday picture as a relaxed family activity, or a classroom image as a screen-based break. Birthday photos, wedding details, garden scenes and travel memories all work well because they give the player something personal to look at while the pieces come together.

You do not need to print, ship or prepare anything. Choose the photo, pick a piece count and hand the screen to the next player when it is their turn. If you want a puzzle that is already prepared, the ready-made library and the daily puzzle are quicker starting points.

Why use a browser-based puzzle maker?

A browser-based tool keeps the workflow simple. There is nothing to install, no app store account and no file-upload step to wait for. Your photo is decoded on your device, so the image can stay private while you play. The same page works on a laptop, tablet or phone, and the puzzle uses the same controls as the rest of Jigsaw Puzzle Spot: drag pieces, pinch or scroll to zoom, and use Fit to bring the board back into view.

Frequently asked questions

Is the puzzle maker free?

Yes. Making and playing a custom jigsaw puzzle is free, and there is no account or payment required.

Do I need an account to make a puzzle?

No. You can choose a photo, pick a piece count and start playing without signing up or creating a profile.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The image is processed only in your browser. It is not uploaded to Jigsaw Puzzle Spot, stored in an account, or added to the public puzzle library.

What image formats and sizes are supported?

JPG, PNG and WebP images are supported. The file must be 15MB or smaller and no larger than 6000 by 6000 pixels.

How many pieces can I choose?

You can choose 24, 48, 96 or 192 pieces. Smaller counts are quicker; higher counts are better for a longer session.

Can I save or share my custom puzzle?

The current version creates a private puzzle in your browser. It does not create a public share link, save the image online, or add the puzzle to the public library.

Does the custom puzzle work on a phone or tablet?

Yes. The puzzle maker and game run in modern mobile browsers. Image size limits may be more noticeable on older devices with less memory.

What kind of photo makes a good puzzle?

Look for a photo with a clear subject, sharp focus, varied texture and enough colour contrast. Very dark, blurry or uniform images are harder to solve at higher piece counts.

Can I use a pet photo or a family photo?

Yes. Pet portraits, family photos, travel pictures and celebration images are all good candidates. Just make sure you have the right to use the image and that the subject is clear enough to recognise once it is cut into pieces.
